On July 24 2009, the Knowledge Centre Religion and Development organized a panel discussion on the topic 'Responding to Climate Change: Religion and Southern Perspectives on Light Development'. The panel was part of the conference 'Religion, Nature, and Progress', hosted by the International Society for the Study of Religion, Nature, and Culture (Amsterdam, July 23-26 2009).
The program included a practice-based presentation by the South-African community developer Attie van Niekerk (NOVA), who demonstrated how local communities can contribute to climate change mitigation and receive funding through the Clean Development Mechanism, a carbon credit trading system set up under the Kyoto Protocol. In the Dutch magazine
Vandaar appeared an
article about this project.
Environmental ethicist Louke van Wensveen (Oikos/Knowledge Centre) offered a matching policy proposal for structuring 'light development' as a North-South franchise. Interfaith activist Chander Khanna focused on ancient Hindu insights for living lightly on the Earth and Seva director Radj Bhondoe stressed the importance of rethinking the meaning of development and growth. The panel was moderated by Hans Opschoor (ISS), who led the audience in the follow-up discussion.
